What AM I allowed to do without an architect, permit, and/or LPC approval???
Is there some sort of list that explains what we are allowed to do on OUR house without hiring an architect, filling for permits and/or getting approval from LPC?
Flooring?
Bathrooms tiling?
New windows?

Not sure that xagor’s response is very helpful since “anything” adds up to very little when you subtract all the projects that DO require regulation. In terms of LPC, their website (which is part of nyc.gov) offers a lot of guidance.

You can do anything as long as it doesn’t require regulation or technical professional knowledge and liability. Most of the time this is an improvement over no regulation and no technical professional knowledge and liability. Here’s some helpful information straight from the horse’s mouth:

If I could edit my post, I would have clarified that the other two on the list need neither (assuming no plumbing moves in the bathroom retiling jobs).

Of that list, only windows would need both LPC approval and permits.
