To expose brick? Or not to expose brick?

I’m in a prewar (1905) six-story co-op. The exterior walls are approximately 12 inches thick, plus about 3/4 inch of plaster and a sheet of 5/8 drywall over that. I’m considering exposing one of the brick walls but I want opinions on three things first:
1 – These are exterior walls. Am I allowed to expose a portion of this? I know the code is fine with exposing brick on a party wall since there is no significant issue of heat loss, but for exterior facing walls is this allowed? (I tested for heat loss already and the small patch I exposed had only a 1 degree difference so from my perspective that’s fine.
2 – The walls are sealed on the outside with that white waterproofing paint used by a lot of buildings on the side/rear brickwork. I know it’s bad to insulate bricks from both sides, but it seems like for livability I need to seal them inside my apartment if they’re exposed. If I expose and seal from the inside, will this cause the brick be unable to breathe, causing damage to the brick?
Anything else I should be factoring into this decision apart from heat loss and the possibility of damage to brick from sealing on both sides? (I’m aware of the bug issue but not too concerned if I seal properly.

A bit late to comment, but if you haven’t made the decision yet, I would echo the note about checking with your board or managing agent about what is allowed. I was in a co-op unit on the market not that long ago where exposing the brick was allowed and it was clear there were some pipes and wiring that they just weren’t expecting. While that funky look might suit the vibe in a loft it looked decidedly odd for the era of the particular apartment building. Also, it didn’t help with the sound insulation in the unit.

You will freeze. The small space is not representative of what will happen when you expose the whole wall. Regular bricks have an r value of under 1 while code these days in NYC for walls is 11 or above minimum and most people will try for over 25.

AFAIK the city does not prohibit exposing brick on an exterior wall. But your co-op may not allow it, and you may have to run any renovation plans by them first. Check your bylaws. Personally, I wouldn’t do it. It will be cold — much colder than your small test demonstrated — and potentially unsightly if there is anything apart from brick along the wall (such as beams, wiring, or pipes). The interior layer of brick may be crumbling and need repointing as well.
