Strip-it sale on home we're renovating?

We are going to be gutting a two family townhome and there’s a surprising number of stuff that I think may be of value to others, however nothing is remarkable enough to list on craigslist. There is, for example, a pretty new but low-grade gas stove, probably 4 almost brand-new ceiling fans, some pendant lights, microwaves, etc that I imagine landlords could use in their rentals, but we don’t have the desire or the time to remove them and list them for sale (plus, everything would be cheap.) Someone we know spoke of a thing called a “strip-it sale” where we open the house up for a day and people can come and take what they want for a pre-determined price- they uninstall and haul themselves. I don’t know if this is a thing that happens in Brooklyn, or if we would get any response if we posted an ad for such a sale here or on CL. For those of you who renovated- how did you sell the current fixtures/did you sell them at all? It seems a shame to toss perfectly good, like-new appliances or fixtures, but they’re not worth enough to invest a ton of effort into them.

I left appliances (fridge, stove) in front of the house with a sign saying “works, free” and someone took them. Another vote for build it green.

Thanks for the info, Cate. The stringers on the stairs need to be replaced (very warped and worn from all the years of use,) so the banister and newel post will be stripped outside in the backyard after they’re removed. I’ll try my hand at it, I think… although my husband is not as confident in my fortitude (all the more reason to DIY, right?) The amount we would pay to get it stripped professionally outweighs the cost of replacing them, plus I’d honestly love to feel some connection to the history of the house since we have to replace so much throughout!

Also if you want to haul this stuff yourself, Build It Green will happily take all of it. Local used appliance stores will also happily buy (for a low price) or cart away your used appliances. There are three or four on Broadway, for example.

The medallions are easy to do yourself, but I strongly advise paying expert wood strippers to do the post and banister or anything else you want done now, while the house is under renovation, and before you pull up the linoleum or whatever is covering the floors. It’s really not all that expensive or time consuming. But doing it later is a huge pain, messy, toxic, and ruins your plaster/paint/floors. I’m not allowed to recommend people b/c I work for Brownstoner, but if you search this Forum you will find names of wood strippers who are really not that expensive. (About the same cost as painting.)

Thanks, rh. How did you find the sales you’ve been to before? Many of the things that I would consider to be “valuable” would be pretty easy to remove: the appliances and fans, for example. I agree that I don’t think we’d want people playing with heavy-duty powertools in the house! Also thanks for the heads-up on the medallions, I’ll take a look at the product you listed. The newel post and banister are also covered in 100 years of paint and I very strongly want to keep them, so I guess I’ll be learning how to strip paint…

I’ve gone to a few of those sales before, where I had to remove the fixtures myself. I would imagine it’s a liability for the homeowner to have a bunch of people with tools ripping apart their house, but for the buyer it’s worth it because the items were either free or incredibly inexpensive. There are other sales where the contractor or homeowner removes the fixtures and then people just buy them. I’d be interested in those medallions, but you might want to keep them. They really aren’t such a big deal to strip. Peel Away overnight, covered with plastic will take away multiple layers of paint.

One mantle so far, but we’re keeping any mantles that are original (6 total fireplaces but we can only see two, the others are covered with walls.) There seems to be a few original medallions but they are covered with probably 30 coats of paint, anyone who wants to put the work into it can take those. We are keeping the newel post and banister. I believe there is some original molding behind one wall (you can barely make out the outline of an archway which is in a bedroom wall) but who knows how the condition will be. House is 150+ years old and has never been rehabbed, but many layers of walls/paint/flooring have been added over the years! Lots of home depot level fixtures/appliances.
