Stairway-turned-Closet organization ideas?

Hello, we live in the garden level of a townhouse in Brooklyn, and the stairs that used to lead to the parlor floor have been converted to a closet, stairs included.

Does anyone have any suggestions or examples of storage/organization *on top of* stairs, not below? Right now it’s a bit of a disaster in there…
