Soundproofing multi family home
Hello! So glad there’s this resource. I’ve searched through the forums and whilst I’ve seen a lot of tips advice ref soundproofing, I’m looking for a reliable and reasonably priced sound proofing company or contractor familiar with this issue (looking to soundproof ground floor of duplex) for home below (dropping ceiling in lower floor apartment isn’t an ideal option due to low ceiling so would prefer to explore options with ground of apartment above). Thank you!

Thank you all! This is all extremely helpful. I don’t have the budget to soundproof extensively so it looks like I will have to be extremely practical in terms of how much the sound will be reduced and it seems like replacing the insulation in the ceiling might be the best way to go.

I just pulled almost 20 tons of tiles and mortar out of a 3 family house. The developer was ‘leveling the floors’, which led to 2 inch mortar in some parts. The walls started to crack …

I was just going to write that I wouldn’t use cement on upper floors. Ok in the cellar and ground level. Cement floors are common in some countries but the walls and floors are designed to support that weight.

Insulate walls and floors, add one layer of 5/8″ sheetrock on a resilient hat channel on all walls and ceilings, seal all openings including doors and windows.

You can get at least a 50% improvement by stuffing insulation between the studs and layering sheetrock with green glue. Quiet rock is expensive and the weight is really heavy but it is great dense material. In the end that’s what you want to keep sound from traveling.

Do you not want to drop the ceiling or you don’t want to work on the ceiling? Quietrock or similar products make a big difference without the need for resilient channels. But they are not cheap costing 40+ a sheet vs 7-10 for regular drywall. However you won’t lose height. I can attest in makes a very noticeable difference, and is easy to install without compromising space.

@rick – thank you! @housefix – I was told that might be an option but it seems as if that didn’t really work that well. I’m looking for at least a 50-70% improvement and not complete soundproofing (thank you @rick for clarifying). How much did it reduce the sound by and did you do the work yourself or use a company/contractor?

@shaq, come back and let us know what they recommended when you find one.
I put in a second layer of subfloor plus acoustic underlayment plus quiet rock in the ceilings and it still didn’t work that well. Probably need resilient channels plus 2x drywall on the ceiling below. I saw a video on a new construction where they beefed up the structure and poured in 2 inches of concrete top of the subfloor… supposedly that works better but who knows…

Difficult to truly soundproof, you would likely need a special engineer . Sound deadening material can help a great deal. I have used products like Quiet Rock and Green Glue that help keep sound from traveling but it is not soundproof. Soundproofing would need a great deal of structural changes designed by an engineer.
