REPLACE WOOD SIDING

I have a frame house and I want to take off the layers of old vinyl siding, asphalt shingles and dilapidated original clapboard (it is not salvageable) and put on new cedar siding. the house is a 4 story 2 family and we are fully sprinklered. 1\. does DOB allow wood siding? 2\. if so, do i need additional permits, i already have ALT2 permits for other work on the house (structural, plumbing, electric). I am working with an architect and expeditor and i have a contractor, and there are varying opinions on whether or not we can do this…..

I keep checking this thread, hoping for more replies. I can’t remember anybody else bringing it up here before. Siding is one of those specialties where a contractor can make money, but the results are not often interesting to look at. I hope you write again about your decision, the installation, how it weathers, and how people adjust to it.

Randolph, I don’t doubt the original clapboard is not salvageable, but how do you know? Did you take a piece off somewhere? I am asking because we are about to embark on the same project ourselves. We are leaning toward using Hardie in the back and wood in the front. In fact, we want to uncover the original siding in the front. If it turns out to be in really bad condition, we could replace with cedar, our contractor said.

There are certainly a lot of wood frames around that are renovated using real wood. LPC won’t allow Hardie or wouldn’t until recently. Maybe it’s a case of being grandfathered in.

Listen to the architect who should know the applicable code. Many contractors may not know the code that applies to a specific zoning district. if the expediter thinks he/she knows more than the architect (once in a while they do), ask for the specific section of the code and consult the architect. If you expose the plain side, not the faux grain side, and paint it a nice color, it is very difficult to see the difference between wood planks and hardie board. The paint adheres a lot longer to hardie board, and it is pretty good on fire resistance. That said, I’ve seen some interesting new re-sidings with wood, including at least one permitted gut reno of a frame house, so i figure it is probably allowed.
