Refinishing floors

I’ve recently met with a few contractors regarding a 900 sq ft apt renovation that would include refinishing the floors, renovating a small kitchen using ikea cabinets, and replacing light fixtures. The two estimates that I’ve received so far are approx. $16,000 and $27,000. This seems like such a great difference. One priced refinishing the floors at $2200 and the other at $5000. What have you found to be the average sq ft price for refinishing wood floors?

@Eliz – I found him responsive and he worked with my schedule for the most part. I was doing an entire house so matching floors wasn’t a problem. I liked working with him and his crew and would recommend him.

We used Polish Hardwood Floors. Very good, very dependable, even after the job was done for floor issues we had unrelated to their work. People who used them based on our recommendation were equally pleased.

I’m looking for recommendations for flooring companies to do a small repair/refinish job. I met with Carlos, but he has been very unreliable getting back to me and I worry that if we book a date, he might disappear. @chinatownred, how was your experience? Jose recommended above has not called back. Verrazano was pricy and told me two different things during two conversations — I’m afraid I’ll pay a lot and then this room will end up looking completely different than my other floors. I know I need to stop worrying and book someone; would appreciate advice.

What Rick said. Independent floor guys will always be cheaper and do a better job. I recommend Jose. Many people here have used him. 917-355-7977

Refinishing floors should be the last step of your renovation. Contact a flooring company for a quote. Very likely you will save money on this service if you hire a company on your own.
