Placement of Electric Outlet in Bathroom

We just removated a limestone in Prospect Lefferts. We tiled the wall in front of the sink from top to bottom with a beautiful penny tile. But my contractor put an outlet in the middle of the wall. I want to move the outlet to the side of the sink. He is saying it needs to be on that wall by code. All I can find on line is that the outlet has to be within 3 freet of the edge of the bowl. But can it be on any wall? Does the code say it has to be on the wall in front of the sink and not on the wall to the side? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The outlet can be to the side of the sink, but it will obviously mean getting the wire there from where it is, is the rear of the wall accessible? Otherwise the tile all around will need to be broken open and redone, this is probably what your contractor was referring to; yes it can be done, but at what cost?

The outlet can be on the side wall if it is close to the sink, it does not have to be on the wall the sink is attached to.
