Kitchen Island outlets

I am thinking about a large kitchen island – 3′ x 10′ – and wondered about the rules for electrical outlets. I read that the rules have recently changed, removing the requirement for outlets since kids get into them (NEC, 2023 revision, Section 210.52(C)(2)). Others have said I need two outlets, given the size, but could put those GFI outlets under the sink, reserved for future use. Very confusing and not necessarily mutually exclusive. I’ll need GFI outlets by the sink for the dishwasher. Does anyone know the current NYC DOB rules for outlets on an island? Thanks.

there very much so is a size requirement on the large islands. i cannot recall it off hand so when i do these inspections, i just look for an outlet at one end and the other and that takes care of it in houses and with islands this size.

i now tell people all outlets in the kitchen must be GFI for safety. i can get the code later.

My two cents: Keep any outlets above any water source (that might spill, leak, or flood) for safety. So above not below the sink. Also use a licensed electrician, the real thing, not someone claiming to be licensed who just works for a licensed electrician. You will save money 100 times over as they are much faster, better, and know what they are doing. The licensed electricians do know the code and will not do anything against it. Also be aware aisles (such as between an island and a counter) should be at least 3 feet wide, and be sure to allow adequate room for oven and dishwasher doors to open. You can tape out the measurements to test the proportions and be sure you like them. Or start with a restaurant kitchen table. 3 by 10 sounds perhaps oversize. You’ll have to do a lot of walking to get around it. You could also enlist the help of a designer or architect — always a good idea when you’re thinking of spending more than a few thousand dollars IMHO.

If the DOB was user friendly you could just phone them, but I know that’s a naive suggestion. Would that they functioned more like the LPC.
