Fair price for selling original brownstone details (doors, moulding. etc)?
I am planning a gut renovation of a Park Slope brownstone and will be removing a lot of the original details, interior doors, ornate frames/moulding around windows, marble fireplace mantle, etc. Given that most people renovating brownstones seem to want to add missing details I was planning to see if I can sell the pieces I remove, but I don’t have a good sense of what the market price would be. Can anyone help out what ballpark would be reasonable.

To expand on what “chemosphere” wrote, I bought a large Eastlake-style cornice (from over a door, or window), with the intention of making it into a range hood. The thing sat in my cellar for more years then I’d like to admit, but I finished the project several months ago, by lining the cornice with sheet metal and adding lights, a fan, and a filter. Check with your neighbors – if your house is one of a row, you may find that they have identical moldings/doors that they’re missing and they want to replace.
If you get really creative, you can make some of that stuff into art objects. A door can become a coffee table or moldings can become a shelf. It’s probably late 19th c. mahogany or oak, which could look beautiful even if refashioned into something modern.

While your choice is quite different from one I’d make I applaud your decision to renovate your house to your own taste and live in it for a long time. Good luck finding buyers for the details you want to remove. Even if you can’t get much money for the painted woodwork you could save something by having someone remove it prior to demolition. Also, it’s good karma to try to have this irreplaceable stuff reused! If all else fails I think there are dealers, like Demolition Depot, who will take it on consignment although, from what I’ve been told, you’re unlikely to get much of a return from them.

Thanks for your response. I am very aware of value considerations, and the decision is something we have been agonizing over for years, but in the end we are planning to live in the house for a long time and we are doing the renovation for us, not someone else’s taste. My assumption is that the marble fireplace mantle will be the easy part to sell, but the other pieces (painted over and in various condition) may be a trickier thing to put a value on so wanted to see if anyone else have any experience with this. The ideal thing would be if the person buying it would come with their contractor to remove it prior to my main demo (early July).

FWIW you’ll never get enough to equal the value you’re stripping from your house along with the details, but I guess your mind is made up and there’s no accounting for taste. I’m VERY happy that you’re thinking of selling what you’re taking out. There’s a house near me where the new owners are dumping fragments of the original details (which the last owners painstakingly restored) into a dumpster. That made me sick
