Call Jose @ Dun Rite Rubbish Removal in Brooklyn. I’ve hired them for quite a few demo jobs over the years. They do a great job.

@GreenThinker I tried contacting Junk It Today NYC. Their phone line has some kind of issue. No reachable yesterday and today. Sent them a message. Thanks for the info – hopefully they reach out.

@ stevecym Good cautionary advice. I did the same demo job myself on the top floor a couple of years ago. I had stuff tested for asbestos (came up negative). It was me and 2 guys with a van. We brought everything to a dump. And you’re right, getting rid of the garbage is the hard part.

Greens advice is always good. And part of the problem is removing stuff. If you and a friend can pull it down and let someone bag and carry out, that is a lot of battle.

It is going to make a lot of dust though.

Reach out to “Junk It Today NYC” I’ve used them in the past, they have a instagram page with photos of their work. Good group of guys. As for reasonable price, thats subjective. I would ask, once you finish renovating your apartment; if you’re going to rent is out for a reasonable price. If you want to make money, you have to spend money to get things done.

I am not sure this really crosses the line for demo. Again, never mind the city but worry about the insurance. I should not say never mind the city but what i am saying is insurance is important with something like this.

I would be more concerned about acm (asbestos containing material) and lead from paint. I would get this stuff tested and use a contractor who can deal with these if present. I dont mean to lecture about it and have not always been careful with my own health, but if there are children around, like on neighboring properties, we have to be careful. Someone might say something and then you have an issue. So you need a real and professional contractor to help navigate those issues.

You might have to file to remove those walls. Someone here by me removed walls in their basement and the dob came and told him “this is not how this was built. Get an architect and draw it and file it”.

I am just thinking what happens if a neighbor drops a dime or a work person gets hurt.

@doorsbythetinkerswagon – The work is being done on one apartment in a 3 family building. I am the only person living in the building.

Here’s the work being done:
– remove all the plaster and lathe on walls and ceiling.
– remove non-load bearing walls
-remove the old kitchen and bathroom
-remove the flooring down to the subfloor

if you are trying to demolish a building or load bearing walls, the demolition crew will probably not fall into the average person’s understanding of “reasonably priced” due to the insurance requirements and responsibility involved.

if you are trying to find people to rip out say old bathroom tile and perhaps the fixtures or any old kitchen without touching the walls, you may not need a licensed (i think the city licenses demo contractors) demolition contractor but simply some people willing to do the work. big difference here in terms of cost.

i don’t really have a name, but if you clarify your needs, i bet someone else can come up with some names.

i just took a quick look, it seems different people can do different things. here is a link: https://www1.nyc.gov/site/buildings/industry/contractors.page

but none of these people will be a “demolition crew”. they will be a contractor who sends a “demolition crew”. never mind the licensing of these individuals or the contractor, it is the insurance that is important in something like this – both to protect you and the employees working for the contractor (and you do not want uninsured individuals doing this on your premises) and the public. and if walls are being moved, it is important that an architect has approved it.
