clawfoot tub installation?

OK so I found a clawfoot tub, now I am having my doubts about my contractor’s ability to install it properly. We are doing a gut reno of the bathroom, so now is the time to do it right, the floor is open etc. From looking around on the internet it seems you sort of have to know what you are doing when putting these things in, or is it not that big a deal? Anyone have any experience/horror stories/installer recommendations, please feel free to share thanks!

Yes, rh is exactly right. You have to order specialty drains, supply lines, and whatever else you need. We ordered ours from Vintage Tub online but there are a bunch of suppliers. You may need a plumber if any of the lines need to be cut to fit and threading added, or if they need to be bent without disturbing the shiny finish. This is not easy to assemble no hub or glue together PVC. We had a particularly messy and complicated connection to the water supply, so we had a plumber install the shiny pretty nickel finish supply lines. A contractor/carpenter put in the shower extension because the plumbers didn’t want to deal with fastening the arms to studs or joists. As it happened, one shower riser was the wrong size and had to be cut. Unfortunately, that was the one with threading instead of a compression fitting. So our contractor cut it and the big 24-hour plumbing supply near Home Depot in Bed Stuy (on Flushing???) was able to thread it for him. They were worried about the nickel finish flaking off, but I think they put a rag around it and it turned out OK.

You just have to make sure that you order your supply lines, drain and shower kit/faucet in advance. It’s not something that your local Home Depot has in stock. I like Signature Hardware, but you can even get clawfoot plumbing fixtures on eBay.

You always have to know what you are doing, but I’d thing that installing a clawfoot tub would be _easier_ than installing a modern fitted tub. After all, it just sits there. Getting anything that heavy up the stairs is another matter.
