Cable TV/Phone/Internet in Bed Stuy

Would be greatly appreciated if you could share your experience in dealing with cable companies servicing Bed Stuy. Time Warner does not service the area; any others that people have good experience with. Thank you in advance.

DSL is probably NOT a good option. I live in Lefferts Manor, where the phone wires are especially bad and cable isn’t available, so Bed Stuy might be different (and could hardly be worse), but my service DSL was extremely slow, with many outages. I had Earthlink DSL, which uses Verizon wires. The last straw came last Spring, when Verizon disconnected my DSL line (one week after repairing it) and Earthlink wanted to charge me to restore service. I tested two wireless services, which were both faster than DSL. My DSL had tested at about 1.5 mb/sec (or was it kb/sec? whichever is the standard measure). Clear tested at 2 mb (or kb)/sec; an AT&T Unite devise at 18–30, depending on time of day. I returned the Clear devise. Some additional considerations: The clear service is very sensitive to distance from their antenna; a friend’s Clear service, only a block away was much slower than DSL. However Clear gives unlimited data usage, AT&T doesn’t The AT&T service is only economical if you combine it on a plan with at least one smart phone and a tablet. Also. unlike Clear, the AT&T service doesn’t offer unlimited data. I pay for 15 gigs/month which is fine for me, but wouldn’t be OK if you download a lot of videos, or play games online. More data is available, but it gets expensive I believe that Verizon offers a wireless MiFi devise similar to the one I have from AT&T, other cellular carriers probably have them too, so whatever cell service you currently use is worth exploring. One additional bonus with the AT&T devise is that (with an external antenna) it works pretty well at the house we rent Summers in Southern Vermont, so I no longer have to pay for cable internet there.

I live in Bed Stuy and have Optimum (internet only). Service is spotty, it seems to go out several times a week — usually only for 5 or 10 minutes at a time, but it’s annoying (and since I don’t have my face in front of the computer all day, service is probably down even more than I know). I guess I could switch to Verizon DSL. But I don’t know if that would be throwing good money after bad. I wish there were better options. Best of luck brooklyn72 — if you find something that works well for you, please post on the forum!

It’s not like you really choice of cable companies. Brooklyn is divided up between TWC and optimum/cablevision, so if TWC doesn’t service your area it’s going to be Optimum. If/when verizon gets around to making fios available, that’s another option. All the providers play the game of giving you the cheap rate for a year or so, then jacking it up, at which point you can call and tell them you’re going to cancel and they usually will offer you another deal.

We have Optimum/Cablevision for cable, phone and internet. You can get a good, cheap rate for all three for the first year. It’s perfectly fine. We’ve been happy with our service.

I had Comcast TV and it’s far better than TWC as far as outages. Can’t vouch for the internet service. I use a Verizon air card which is fine for surfing but not not for downloading movies.
