Brownstone Gut Renovation

Hi – we’re just embarking on a gut renovation of a 20’ wide townhouse. It has a lot of original fixtures/ woodwork and we are not planning to reuse or restore all of it. Any ideas where or who would be interested in it? There are some pieces in beautiful condition and it would be a shame not to see it reused somewhere else.

Thanks for the feedback – unfortunately it doesn’t work for us to keep the house as it is. But we do hope we can find a home for the items we are no keeping. I’m going to do a separate new post of things we are definitely saying good bye to.

My house was only in marginally better shape. FWIW we kept all the stuff except for the rods over the doorways intended to hold portières.

The plumbing, the cabinets, the woodwork you show can be restored. It’s not difficult. You will need some specialty trades, and not all general contractors are familiar with the procedures. For the cabinets, you need a finish carpenter and/or cabinetmaker. Any general contractor working with a licensed plumber can handle the baths. You need to source the appropriate repro floor tile and specialty plumbing parts (available from a variety of resources such as Vintage Tub & Bath).

I’m with the Revival Gentleman. In the end it’s your house, so do what’s best for you. I took out some things (not woodwork) but some smaller details and regret it. Now I’m slowly trying to restore it.
