Bathroom tile to ceiling?

Hi! Need some advice. We have a full bath on the parlor floor of our brownstone. The shower and toilet are on the same wall. It will be a frameless glass shower. Do we tile the whole wall to the ceiling? Ceilings are 10+’ high. Seems like that might be overwhelming. Suggestions welcome!

You could also drop down the ceiling over the shower to 8′, then tile the whole shower wall height. Usually, if the wall tile in a shower goes to the ceiling then the ceiling of the shower should get tiled too. Outside the shower you have the option of doing less tile, say 42″ height. Definitely do not do a 10′ height of tile – that is too much tile..

2 cents fwiw. To the ceiling or not to the ceiling, that is the question… Tiling up to 7 or 8 feet and capping with picture molding or decorative border tile, I feel adds character, dimension and interest to the space. To the ceiling may make the space feel smaller. Just one guys opinion. As for sinks versus counter space, who is likely to be the primary user of the bathroom and what are their needs e.g. guests need counter space, kids need to get their teeth brushed. On the tile to the ceiling thing, I’ve never been in one but I understand the morgues are tiled floor to ceiling… just sayin Best of luck! Matt R www.nyc-hs.com

Thank you! I think we are def going to go with the single sink. Looking at houzz.

go to the ceiling, especially if you chose the right tile can make it seem a bigger space. check out houzz for examples. also go the single sink, a 48″ double never leaves enough space on the sides for placing items on the counter.

I tiled my shower stall to the ceiling. Once i got above the in-wall niches, it went pretty quick. What I replaced it with was only about 7′ high with paint above that. After having both, i’d say its a matter of aesthetic. In my situation, the shower was 3×3 in its own nook, and the tile up to the ceiling gave it a good vertical feel, bringing your eyes up rather than the feel of how small the shower is. Functionally i’m not sure it is a huge deal.

If the ceiling is that high it would be good to bring the scale of the space down by using a picture molding at about 7′. Take the tile up to that height and use paint above that. The four foot width is a little cozy for two people/sinks so I would go with one sink and more counter space. I think it would feel more elegant.

There are so many options for tiling that my best advice in that regard is look on Houzz. We found so many excellent inspiration photos and ultimately are very pleased with all of our shower tiling choices (all of which go either very close or directly to the ceiling). As for 48 inch double vanities, there are lots of options, some cheap, some pricey. Ikea makes a 40 inch and Lacava’s is 42 inches: Ikea’s is about $600 and Lacava’s about $3000 http://www.bathkitchenandbeyond.com/42-Lacava-AQUAMEDIA-5034-Bathroom-Vanity.html?gclid=CIzL_8XPtrQCFSXNOgod9UYAbw. Here’s one from duravit: http://pinterest.com/pin/29836416251926230/. We had one made by Trueform concrete and have gotten many compliments on it. Good luck!

Also, we have a tiny ensuite master on ground floor. Better to squeeze in a double sink (for resale purposes down the line) – 48″ or do a single sink that allows for more counter space? Thanks again!
