Section of Bedford Stuyvesant

Hi All, I have a question for you.  I’m an investor looking in the Bed Stuy neighborhood.   I’ve seen a lot in the Western Section (near Clinton Hill) but have come across a building I may be interested in on Van Buren between Lewis and Stuyvesant Ave.   What do you think about that portion of the neighborhood?  It’s obviously not as gentrified as the forementioned but I think it has potentional.   What do you think?   -T

Hi amzihill, I live in this “worse section” of Bed-Stuy (to use your definition). Thanks for sending the investors our way, we really need all the “jersification” and “building destruction” (to use the terminology from your comment above), which you are trying to avoid in your “better section” of Bed-Stuy. 🙂 So much for the “save Bedford-Stuyvesant” cause? Luckily, investors will still be guided by market demand, which is currently much stronger in “your” section. Also, thanks for dividing the neighborhood into sections, that’s really nice too.

I like the word investor when it means that the investment benefits everyone, including the people already there.  We who live on this block are not happy when “investors” buy, do lousy renovations and then become absentee landlords with short term tenants.  That is not the kind of investment we want to encourage.  The long time residents have fond memories of a cohesive community.  If you are truly interested in true investment, it should include a lot more than your wallet.  Consider investing in a community, your wallet will follow.

Almost everything has potential. But on this block and around the corner I have seen the developers come in and ruin perfectly nice buildings. So if you do buy it please do a nice job. I lived on this block for a while and hope that it doesn’t get Jerseyfied, as somebody called it.

investors should go to this area of the neighborhood. These areas need help and money coming in…  Investors who live outside the area should not buy in the ” better sections” of Bedford Stuyvesant.  Most of the tendency to destroy buildings, Jerseyfy them and the architectural heritage of the neighborhood….

I’ve lived in Bed Stuy for about 6 years: at Macon and Throop.  I think one major llimitation of Van Buren at Lewis/Stuyvesant is proximity to a subway station.  I know when we were looking we looked at places on Greene and Quincy and decided it was a stretch.  It felt too far for me to walk every day and we figured we’d be limiting our pool of potential tenants.  That said, there are some gorgeous houses out there too and the prices are certainly lower…
