Hi, I am exposing my vulnerable underbelly of novice posting this question. I am the new owner of a cheap-skate coop renovation from the 1980s. The unit is from 1916,a nd formerly had 8 foot tall oak doors and loads of molding. That’s all gone now and I want to throw some of it back. I also want to return the height of the doorways and doors to 8 feet from “standard”. There are also lazy plaster/sheetrocking issues and electrical fixes needed. It’s not a nightmare but it needs upgrading. I would like to attempt this piece meal. I assume the steps to follow are… 1.hire electrician to suppliment outlets, sockets and check loads. 2\. hire plasterer/skimcoater to fix electricians holes and smooth any mistakes from yore.. over. 3\. Find/hire finish carpenter to install window/door casements, molding. I wonder under whose jurisdiction – in anyones, would the doorway opening heighting be. This would just be retrning it to the original size, nothing new/wider etc. Thank you!

If you are looking for original Brownstone doors (8ft tall), check out Eddie on Greene at Grand. You cannot find doors like that at Home Depot. Don’t be scared by the umpteen layers of paint, spend the money (or time) to strip them and you’ll have beautiful, authentic doors. Good luck

I don’t know what an architect would say — maybe one could chime in — but we have done and are doing plaster work after replacement molding is in place, in an old house. Part of the thinking is we don’t want to accidentally create an uneven surface for the molding. (A few surfaces are already uneven, but not many.) Plasterers are accustomed to working around molding, since it is usually present when they skim coat.

Thanks Cate! I think I was getting stuck on the “who doe sthe rough opening on the doorways” – up to the original height. Sounds like the carpenter? Makes sense about the skim-coating being in line with the moldings too.
