Hello all I live in a rental with a carpet thats in a pretty bad condition and is driving me crazy. I want some sort of hard flooring that is a step up from carpet. My landlord said I could get the flooring replaced and she would take the cost off of my rent. Given the size of the apartment (about 900sf) and my budget constraints I think the only thing I can afford is laminate flooring (my subflooring looks like plywood). I have been doing some research and have been looking at Ikea Tundra and Surface Source WInchester wood laminate (that latter which was well rated by Consumer Reports). I was wondering if any one could comment on these brands or any of the other inexpensive ones found at Home Depot/Lowes. Also if anyone has recommendations for someone who could do a good job installing a wood laminate I would appreciate it. Thanks

We have Ikea laminate in one of our rental units. Durable, good-looking product (still looks good after 3 years use). Affordable at usual price, and every so often in the past, Ikea has run reduced-price sales on this product. Easy to install on your own or using a reliable handyman (who might cost you more than the product itself).

Thanks for your responses Cupolacoffee I heard that Ikea laminate was hard to install with chipping and such. But maybe this is the case for all lower end laminates. Did you install yourself or get a handyman? I dont have a handyman. I had used a handyman recommended on this site in the past but he was not good. Deboe I have heard lots of horrible things about LL’s customer service which makes me very wary. But I heard there is another store not too far away from the BK location that has a better reputation. Any other tips Brownstoners may have on laminates would be greatly appreciated.
