Renting in Bay Ridge
I’m hoping to leave Queens when my lease is up and am interested in Bay Ridge. Or, anywhere in Brooklyn where I can rent a 1BR or large studio for $1200 (incl. ht/hw) or less. I’ve seen many postings on Craiglist for this rent structure. But, I have a car, so don’t want to rent a spot, and am looking for a quiet neighborhood feel. Looking for advice on where to look for a 1BR/studio that takes a quiet, chill cat who only likes to sharpen her nails on my rug and does her business in the litter box. I work downtown, so it seems that my commute will be an hour or less (door to door). I’m a single, late 30s woman that makes a decent living for the rent I’m looking for, who wants a quiet building, preferably a small builidng, or even a landlord-occupied house, if the landlord is cool. Where should I walk around to scope out the area to get a feel, and possibly come across a ‘for rent’ sign? Honest broker names are welcome, if they can find me a great place–No BS. I found my current place without one on a forum like this, so would prefer word of mouth or referral. I’m out late only occassionally, so being near all the action isn’t as important as living in a safe, nice area within a 15 walk to the subway. So, any advice is appreciated. What other sources besides Craigslist can I look that’s specific to Bay Ridge? Thanks!

There are many apartment buildings along Ridge Blvd and some on Colonial Rd, but mostly west of Ridge Blvd is single family until you get to Shore Rd. You can easily find a 1bed for $1200 or less. My old building on 75th/Ridge has 1beds for ~$1100\. But unless you plan on commuting via the express bus on Shore Rd ($11/rt) then you really do not want to live farther west than Ridge/Colonial because the walk to the train gets really long (+10 mins), and in the wintertime it’s much slower going because of the hill, and the freezing wind off the bay makes it more unpleasant. Everyone I know living west Colonial Rd drives to/from the subway. Seriously!

I took a drive down there yesterday and think I would only like to live 3rd ave. to the water. Parking appears to be similar to where I live in Astoria. My street has st. cleaning 2X on each side, but I have a routine…I park on my street. on the Tues. side, then drive my care to near the park on the Mon., when st. cleaning is done for the week. Viola, my car sits the rest of the week until I need it on the weekend. I don’t need my car during the week. It looks like living in Bay Ridge close to 1X/week cleaning would be ideal. So, would I be able to find $1200 or less rent for a good size studio/1BR 3rd ave. to the water? I’ll definitely take a stroll down those streets on a nice day to check out the listings in the windows. Any thoughts on Velsor Realty? That was the only name I was able to catch while driving.

OK I agree with Yellowhook – parking in Bay Ridge is easier in some areas — i.e. closer to Colonial / Shore Road because residents have their own off-street parking. But parking anywhere near 3rd/5th Ave – a total hassle. It’s definitely a “drive everywhere” culture down here so there is much more demand than supply. I street parked for 3 years in Brooklyn Heights. That was 5x easier than Bay Ridge IMO. If you can afford it, I do recommend off street parking. But yes, only if you will be living close to the commercial aves. Otherwise street parking is easier. (But you are a lot farther from the subway.) I lived on 75th/Ridge and that’s a 7 minute walk to the train. If you are commuting by train you probably won’t want to live much farther West of Ridge Blvd.

I disagree BOD with view on parking. I can remember spending upwards of 45 minutes parking in Park Slope. I have never spent more than 15 minutes looking for parking here. Then again I walk most everywhere and live close to third, leaving me the option of parking close to ridge where most people have driveways and park there car there. So the answer to how bad parking will be depends on where you live in Bay Ridge.

Walk up 3rd / 5th Ave and look in all the shop windows. Many shop keepers post apartment rentals for their friends. FYI- street parking in Bay Ridge is a NIGHTMARE. Much worse than Park Slope and even Brooklyn Hts.

Try the website, bayridgetalk or come to the neighborhood and pick up a local paper. Those are probably your best bets.
