Thoughts on the Gowanus? (mid-teens between 3/4 ave)
ok, it is getting better above ground. below ground is going to take years, if not decades. some of us would avoid living in close proximity to such a load of toxic chemicals.

I just wanted to see what the Brownstoner community felt about the Gowanus neighborhood. What are some of the pros/cons of living there? How would you envision it in 10-15 years?

My ex-husband bought a house there last fall. In the last 8 months the area has become richer and more vibrant (I am there a lot to pick up and drop off our kids). A hotel, restaurants, night life, coffee place. Walking distance to Lowe’s. I think it will only get better.

I live in that exact area as well (mid teens between 3/4)… just bought a place last fall. I moved down the hill after living in Park Slope for 5 years – had been looking to buy in the slope but after all the places I looked at there I found I could get much more bang for my buck here. Very close to the F & R trains. 3rd Ave and Gowanus canal area have a lot of positive development going on while maintaining an eclectic industrial feel – artist studios, some cool bars & restaurants, Whole Foods is (allegedly) finally beginning construction on 3rd & 3rd. 4th ave has all those new condo buildings, which are bringing new residents and demand for services & improvements along a stretch formerly dominated by auto body shops & whatnot – the 9th st / 4th ave subway station is being renovated & there are rumblings about turning the avenue into a more scenic tree-lined boulevard with bike lanes and more retail. And regardless you’re only a block from the more established Park Slope scene on 5th ave, and I’m still within jogging distance of the park. Overall I’m feeling optimistic – not planning on flipping my property in a year or two in this market, but feel like I made a good long term choice and I’m happy where I am.
