You should also consider finding a local realtor who handles rentals. Tenant will pay the realtor fee and you may find you’ll get higher rent this way. It’s certainly less work.   We rented our our two apartments ourselves the first time, using craigslist and nytimes, and it was a lot of work and we weren’t able to get the rents I’d hoped for. When first lease expired we used Jesse Temple in south slope (Temple Morrow Group 347-725-3370) and Jesse Temple was able to get us great tenants at higher rent… and the tenant pays the fee, so it was not only easier, but cheaper too. And with $300/month additional rental income, a great financial decision.   A lot will depend on the particulars of your rental, but we found renters are willing to pay higher rents when going through a broker. For a recent rental, Jesse was advertising our one-bedroom brownstone floor-though with W/D but no dishwasher for $2600/month (current rent $2100) and was chasing off prospective renters with a stick… might be worth checking it out.

Have you ever tried to look fir an apt in craigslist????  It’s just overloaded with crap and broker spam.  Pay up for a quality listing and get a quality tenant

I looked at Kijiji, but didn’t like it.  Have you seen Renthop?  It’s fairly new but might be good.  Still, Craigslist gets the most traffic.  If you try Craigslist, by the way, I’ve found that listing your telephone number instead of email is a big help in eliminating spam and cutting down on flakes.
