Relocating a radiator?

Is it a steam or hot water system? The radiator in the front of the window also acts as a draft buffer from any cold air coming from the window. Moving it will completely change how much heat is generated from the radiator as well as how much more will be needed to compensate for cold air coming from the window. So besides the physical work of moving the radiator, you will need to rebalance the whole stem. (trial & error) The further away from the riser, the less pressure to get heat to it. It can be done, but is it worth it….probably not, unless you understand that it is going to be a pain! …for a long time. Let sleeping dogs lie.

Hello all. I’m wondering about how difficult it would be to relocate a radiator. My idea was to move the radiator from its current location along the wall in the front corner of the parlor to the space between the two front windows (a move of about 5 or 6 feet). At first, it seemed like this would be a simple enough operation, but the more I thought about it, the more complicated and involved it seemed. I’m guessing floor would need to come up (and go back down), and pipes would need to be extended, etc. Has anybody done this, or is this move more trouble than it’s worth? Thanks for your input.

One pipe steam radiator systems are normally arranged around vertical pipes going up outside the wall. You need to maintain the appropriate slope back towards the boiler for the condensed water to drain out of the radiator. So you would probably need to branch off to the new radiator location from the vertical pipe in the room below the parlor. This may be unsightly.

Assuming that this is one pipe steam, as putnam replied above, this may be way more complicated than you initially predicted, or as easy as you thought… if you are able to stay in between the joists below the floor then you an tear up the the ceiling below and do the piping work. If you are crossing over between joists, you have a major mess on your hands
