We recently received an email from a reader and are posting it here on their behalf. “Dear Brownstoner, I could use your help with something. I live in a large condo building in Brooklyn with my wife and kids and my next door neighbor, a young man, has just had his girlfriend move in. They are making a lot of noise in their bedroom, which shares a wall with our home office. Yes, that kind of noise. My 8 year old son, hearing the noise, asked me if there was something wrong with her… Ugh. I can talk to him directly, or I could talk to the super or the condo board and ask them to talk to him. “All uncomfortable choices.” Things people have to make when they become adults. Talk to him directly. If he’s a jerk about it then take it to the Board but that will likley do no good either as they too won’t want to address it or there is nothing in the bylaws about it.

Sounds like no permits is not a parent and was never an eight-year-old. A discreet, direct conversation is best. “Um, you know, the wall between your bedroom and our apartment is pretty thin and not much of a sound barrier.” You can keep it pretty genteel and get the message across.

My suggestion studiously avoids saying anything to the neighbor about what he does in his home. Point is not to tell the neighbor or his girlfriend to stop, relocate to another room or pipe down (so to speak). Neighbor presumably might not want to be heard and will figure out some sort of adjustment. And if neighbor doesn’t care, that’s really the end of it. But one could say this with even more discretion: “I have my office in the room next to your apartment and I make a lot of phone calls. I hope that isn’t bothering you. I’m not sure you’ve noticed, but the walls are pretty thin in this building and sound travels easily.” Clean as a whistle but I bet the neighbor turns beet red. And no, while a third-grader probably knows in perhaps a general way what sex is, he probably would not associate those particular sounds.
