how to rid of a bum?

While all the bleeding hearts are occuping the Liberty Plaza, I need to ask a question. Latelly a bum moved to next block and spend all his time sitting on the street. Another day I took my kid to school and noticed that the bum was mastrubating right on the street. Is there any way to make this guy to go away?

  One upon a time brooklynchuck, NYS would simply hospitalize such a person and the hospitals were filled with these mentally ill people.  Then with the advent of psychotropic drugs, policy changed since these people are technically able to live with their mental illness assuming they take medication.  The problem is having people take the medication.  So now the streets are filled with people who used to be institutionalized.   The job now falls to agencies/resources outside of the hospital system to make sure they stay medicated.  It doesn’t work too well and the streets are filled with these people.

Call the BRC (Bowery Residence Committee / www.brc.org) Helpline: 212-533-5151.  They are a great organization for homeless New Yorkers.  They are on call 24 hours per day, and will send someone out to the homeless person to offer assistance, including food, housing and specifically a long-term solution in getting them stable.
Always helpful to keep their 24-hour on-call number in your cel phone in case you see a homeless person who looks like they could use some assistance.

There was a guy on 34th and 8th who did this constantlly. Sometimes the cops would come and pick him up but he would be back a week later. If he is mentally ill it is a violation of his rights to put him in prison. So they take him to a hospital. If he is not suspected of being a threat to himself or someone else then the hospital will discharge him, especially since he does not have insurance. So getting him medical insurance in order that he can live in a psychiatric facility or atleast receive regular treatment is the only way I can think of solving this problem permanentlly. But you can call the police for short term solutions.

Forget all this bleeding heart silly overlay you are putting on this.  Just call the cops.  They are trained on how to deal with the mentally ill and I have seen them do a good job.  This person might need to be hospitalized.  I had a guy who was unhindged who used to smoke pot on the steps of the next door coop. That was one thing, not the end of the world, but he was always there, looking really goofy and out of it.  So aside from a mental note, I just let it be.  Then one day the guy is in a totally manic state, pacing up and down the street for over an hour, screaming at the top of his lungs lots of scary stuff.  I called 911 and the cops came and it turns out they knew the guy, were very sensitive to him and gentle in the way they dealt with him.  He was mentally ill, the ranting was “practicing his rapping” and the cops were so familiar with him that they regularly brought him to a psychiatric emergency room and he had spent some time in the hospital. Don’t judge just use common sense.

That is a tough call.  I tried to get help from various city agencies including police regarding men who drink, defecate and sleep on the Manhattan Bridge most visibly from (sometimes on) the bike and pedestrian lanes, Manhattan side  This continues through nearly all weather conditions.  I understand the homeless population is decreasing generally, but less so in Manhattan.  Apparently, newer tactics by the Dept of Homeless Services  services are more effective.  I have seen public masturbation, but never by a homeless person.  People living on the bridge in filth as we ride past on our bikes exposes enormous public failure.  Maybe Transportation Alternatives could lend a hand, but that won’t help BobJohn I have been harassed by police while legally working in gentrifying neighborhoods where new residents have summoned the police over real or perceived dangers.  Unintended consequences can be brutal.

in response to my last post just call the police if he is doing that, you are a grown up and should know that … do you really ne advice to figure that out, and all the bleeding hearts are bussy making sure we have rights, and the term homeless is a little bit nicer than bum. My brother is a psychologist who worked with alot of homeless people and prisoners. The studies showed a large percentage were mentally ill. The bleeding hearts want health care for everyone and if the bleeding hearst succeed the mentally ill would get treatment and then would not be exposing themselves in front of your house.
