commuting from redhook

Any street-level word as to whether Smith-Ninth will re-open in spring 2012, as the MTA website states?

Hi, Is anyone a regular subway commuter from Red Hook?  We’ve been looking there for houses, but everyone always says, “Oh, the subways are lousy!”  Beyond the walk, what’s so lousy – crossing under the expressway late at night?  Smith St. closures?  Am I missing any worse commuting affronts? THanks

i live just over hamilton ave from redhook. well, they say the subways are lousy because there isnt one there…and now that smith/9th street subway  is closed for a while there’s even further to go to get to the F train. I always thought that if you have a bicycle it would be fine when it isnt totally crummy out…and then i guess you could take the bus…as for walking, it would be a about a 20-25 minute walk to the F Carroll Station. I love redhook…there’s something kind of magical about it.

simply put, it is a lousy commute from RH to manhattan via mass transit.  the b61 is always late and pack in the AM.  there is a footbridge over hamilton ave that gets you close to the carroll street subway, but it’s very desolate after dark and not so nice during the day.  biking to borough hall train station seems to be the fastest way to Manhattan.  plenty of newcomers commute by car, especially those living in the fairway building.  that seems so silly to me – to pay outrageous real estate costs to live in the city with the best mass transit in north america only drive everywhere.  the real question for anyone considering a move to RH is, are you banking on sending your kids to public school?
