Tankless Water Heater in Condo
We are having severe hot water problems in our building that the condo has been unable to remedy. I would like to install a tankless water heater to remedy the problem. This may be a large project in that we will likely need to isolate our unit from the others in the buildings system. I am looking for recommendations for a top-quality plumber who can help us through the process. Thanks in advance.

What floor is your unit on? Approx. distance from supply?

Great recommendation gennady. Hire a guy who isn’t licensed by the state, probably has no liability insurance and he’s going to be in your home working with natural gas and water lines that can flood your home or worse, blow it up. There’s reasons to hire licensed contractors and I named those reasons above. Also you want to take out permits to have it inspected to make sure the job was done right. If you purchase the water heater at Home Schleppo, the contractor that installs will not give you any guaranty if the unit fails. I work in wholesale and I usually tell the homeowner to call a contractor rather than buy it themselves. Hire cheap, you get a cheap job. It’s not near as simple as you think. I’ve been in this industry for 35 years and have had to deal with people/hacks who think they know more than trained contractors. Buy a Yugo or a Cadillac. Your choice. Also venting can be an issue. Is it near a door or a window once it penetrates the outside wall? Things to consider. Good luck rand.

go to the plumbing supply, or home depot, and buy heater, ask them for installer, they will recommend one. Just make sure he is not licenced, Those licenced guys want too much denero for simple work like that.

Venting is not an issue – I have significant space and the capacity to vent outside in less than 4 feet of run. The issue will be isolating our apt from the other eight being fed by the same system. I’m simply looking for recommendations re experts who can help me with this project.

Why do you think a tankless water heater will remedy your problems? Venting is definatly an issue and if there’s more than one apartment you may need more than one tankless heater and larger gas line to nail down the btu’s needed to make everyone happy. Indirect water heating is one way to go if you have a hot water boiler(and enough btu wiggle room to accomodate). A Lochinvar Armor high eff. water heater and a storage tank is the way I would go. But as MP said, you may have venting issues.

First make sure you can vent it as per manufatcturer’s instructions and NYC Code. Changes are that’s the major hurdle.
