Removing (capped) sconce lighting gas lines.

We have a couple of capped gas lines sticking out of the walls in the top floor of our brownstone. It looks like they used to be for sconce lighting. What are the odds that these have gas in them? If so, is it possible to cap them at the T instead of having them hang an inch past the wall? Should I call a plumber, or can I just pull ’em out myself?

I’ve also had good luck finding things like that at Demolition Depot in Spanish Harlem, if BiG doesn’t pan out.

Thanks. Yes, I’m talking about the ceiling fixture. I need a fixture with a cone-shaped ceiling plate to cover the gas line and can’t find a thing I even remotely like. Thanks for your reply, though–I’m glad it worked out for you. Thanks for mentioning Build it Green, I’ll check out that place soon.

Or were you talking about the one in the medallion, not the wall sconces? I bought an old chandelier from Build It Green! in Gowanus. It came with a hickey and everything. I think we needed a reducing fitting to get the existing pipe to screw into the hickey, but the hardware store around the corner had that. Again, we knew the gas line was dead at this point, so we didn’t have to worry about that.

I got lucky, actually. I had a plumber over for something unrelated a day or two later, and I mentioned it to him. He walked over to the gas meter in the basement, looked at the pipes and said “this is all too new for gas lighting.” Poked around a bit and found a cut-off pipe from where the meter hooked into the old gas lines for the building. Then he walked upstairs, grabbed one of the nipples with a pair of pliers and unscrewed it. The line was dead. He put a cap in the tee, anyway, but the whole thing was pretty anticlimactic once he found the old gas lines.

I know this post is old, but I have the same problem: a 3″ gas line ( that can’t be made inactive) in a 100 year old co-op and no light fixture to accommodate it! What was your solution?

Thanks for all the info Bob, Cate, Townie. There is definitely a new(er) gas line for a stove and dryer, but there’s enough going on with the pipes in the basement that I couldn’t categorically say whether or not the old lines had been cut off or not. I’ll definitely involve a plumber in the process 🙂 Bob, I actually looked up “hickey” too. I’d never heard it in the electrical sense, so I figured it was an overeager autocorrect for “dohickey”. Townie, the existing thing is a *mess*. See the attached photo. There are three other medallions on the parlor floor, and I imagine they all have similar things underneath, but this is the only one that’s actually visible. That pipe seems to stick down quite far. That won’t fit under a standard light fixture base, right? The other light fixtures on this floor have tall, almost conical bases.

Maybe not Cate; my house had very little done to it over the years, but when a new gas furnace was installed c. 1965 the gas line was replaced, including new piping to the gas range. Bottom line is it’s either on, or off. If that’s not patently obvious, as it was in my house, where I can see the old cut-off pipe, a plumber should look at it before anyone messes with the old gas lighting fixtures.

They are almost certainly live and connected to your stove gas, as we found out the hard way when our nipples were cut and the stove line ruined by some workmen. (The gas to the house was turned off at the time, although the gas co told us it was on.) A plumber can easily remove them.

BTW, “hickey” is an interesting term: hick·ey (hk) n. pl. hick·eys Informal 1\. A device or contrivance; a gadget. 2. a. A reddish mark on the skin caused by amorous kissing, biting, or sucking. b. A pimple. 3\. A pipe-bending apparatus. **4\. A threaded electrical fitting used to connect a fixture to an outlet box.** Years ago I read that the electrical version is short for “dohickey”

You’d probably have to go to a real old time hardware store, like Leopoldi’s on 5th Avenue, to find a gas hickey. They don’t always fit though. For example, the lighting gas pipes on my parlor floor are larger than standard (to allow for hanging heavier fixtures?). You can always cobble something together, if need be.

Mr. Marvin is right about using the gas line to hang light fixtures…You can get a hickey from the hardware store. See picture- As for your medallion is there an existing light fixture now or some kind of plate covering an electrical box or just the gas line? A competent Brooklyn electrician or plumber should be familiar with whatever exists and be able to do the work without destroying the plaster.

I was lucky–the gas lines for lighting had obviously been cut off in my cellar some time before I bought my house (or, perhaps, not so lucky as that also cut of the lines to my five gas fireplaces). Justinh: I’d suggest NOT removing the gas lines poking out of your ceiling medallion. They make great supports for heavy light fixtures. You should, of course, have the gas cut off further down the line–probably in your cellar–IF it this hadn’t been done previously.

Townie: We actually have a gas line poking out of a ceiling medallion as well. Would the plumber be able to remove it (or cut it back or whatever) without messing up the medallion? What was your experience with that?

Definitely agree with Townie – call a plumber. I innocently started replacing a ceiling fan only to discover the gas line it was connected to was not only still live but actively leaking. The house was chilly for a couple days until the plumbers could get there!

Call a plumber. They will be able to tell you whether they are still live and if possible cut them off at the source in the cellar. The problem is that the lines may service a stove somewhere else in the house. Our old lines were still live and one in our ceiling medallion actually was leaking gas probably for years and years. You might be able to get that nipple extracted from the tee but it will be a tough fight.
