PEX tubing used in supplying water to washer machine

in the process of repairing a damaged section of the drywall, we discovered a section of water lines to washer machine was ran with PEX tubing. hot and cold water pipes starts with copper, but there is a section are PEX then back to copper near the washer machine outlet. I don’t know the history on why it was done that way. I hear in NYC, PEX is only allow for heating so that would make this not up to code. Appreciate your feedbacks on this. Thanks.

you could say the same thing about romex. And if you think the incidence of rodents chewing Pex in the general US can be extrapolated to NYC, and have the same impact on people’s lives (a 20th story leak affects a heck of a lot of people) then perhaps you have only lived in NYC. These are not field mice that can run back into the field. Show me the data from Paris and i may be convinced, until then my opinion is that it is pretty stupid to have Pex for water supply in NYC.

@DOW, yes it does happen but does anyone have any factual numbers of percentages? Its like everyones freaked out over terrorists….but your chances of dying from eating a peanut is higher than terrorism. Why would PEX be just fine for the rest of country but not NY?

dean, google much? its a popular search engine used by people who surf the internet. if you’re too busy just do an image search for “rats eat pex”, i’m guessing since you spent more time logging into brownstoner and typing three sentences than a three word google search what you really wanted to do was troll.

I was going to say is there actual proof that rats eat pex? if there is then the rest of the country would be flooding left right and center….. Either NYC is the only place in the country that has a ‘rat issue’ OR its a case of NYC being behind the times……..

Pex is fine. Watch your connections though. If you have sharkbite connectors, make sure they are exposed. If the connection is a crimp style, I feel it is ok to bury in the wall. Press-on sharkbite connectors do have a tendency to leak. If the connector is exposed, you can observe it. I have stopped a leaking connector by simply twisting it and pressing it together again.

i have pex for heating – hydronic hot water. Mine is a closed system (i believe) and my understanding – i could be wrong – that this is not as dangerous as a pipe with street pressure. Perhaps Master Plumber could expand.

Normally i would be in the “who cares” camp, but rats and mice can (and have) chewed through Pex. I put Copper in the category of products in NYC that we need (such as BX electrical cable) because we live too close together and have too many rodent friends to risk fires and flooding. Not sure if i have ever lived anywhere in Manhattan or Brooklyn that didn’t at one time have a rodent issue.
