leaking gas question - do we need a permit?

call firemen first..not national grid..they will see how dangerous the situation is and cut the gas in your house not the gas access then work with a plumber to find leak and repair..

we had a gas leak in our cellar and the gas company shut off our gas – to our hot water heater etc.  the plumber is now saying that we need to pull a permit to repair the line?  is that true?

Mistake #1\. Don’t rush to call the gas company. Call plumber than gas company. Gas company shuts you off then will not re-open the gas till you have the issue re-inspected by the gas company. Just my 2 cents Levi Capland

levicapland, REALLY bad advice. DON’T mess with gas. No amount of time and money saved is worth it versus the potential loss of life due to an explosion.

A house on my block is doing a full gut job and busted their main gas pipe.  National Grid along with 3 fire trucks came to the house.  The outcome was they turned off the gas, and now a licensed plumber must repair the pipes.  According to one of the firemen, they wont be able to resume work until the city signs off on the repair work.

The hassles do suck. I agree. But the fact is that most people don’t know how to shut off the water when there’s a leak. Gas is not something you want to have leaking while you call your neighbor to come help you find a valve, then look for the wrench.
