Has anyone replaced their sewer line?
I am about to replace my lead water main. I was told after having a camera sent down my sewer line that some roots have broken through and are growing inside. I was quoted 15k to replace it, but the plumber recommended that I have the pipe power washed and use a root killer. He also recommended a maintenance plan that included the root killer once or twice a year. The power wash with root killer is 2k. My question is would your replace your sewer line? Does 15k sound like a lot? Thanks in advance.

My family just had a new sewer installed, we received estimates from all the different contractors mentioned on brownstoner and ended up using Harris Water & Sewer. They made the best impression upon initial meetings and carried through the entire project. The pricing was far better than the two other companies. It also seems that they are the “go to” company in Brooklyn.

I am thinking out for a replacement of sewer line. Searching for a professional plumber who can handle and manage this issue nicely. Because I don’t get much time to discuss all stuffs in details. Therefore, I need a professional. If anyone having any suggestion, please share. Thanks in advance.

Who did you use for the camera inspection, where you happy with their work, and what did it cost?

Get several estimates. A lot will depend on how busy the plumber is. I just got prices for a similar job and $15k sounds pretty much in the ballpark to me for a water main replacement. But the range was a lot wider than I expected. For me, Balkan was the highest bidder. I ended up using Figiolia and have been very happy with the work. bobjbkln is right about distance. The water main is on the same side as the fire hydrants. So if you are on that side, the digging is a whole lot less and cost will reflect that. I needed engineering drawings, expediter, and permits for my work — that was on top of the plumber costs. I wasn’t sure from your post if you were replacing just the water main or the sewer line too. If your sewer line is busted by roots, probably best to replace it…and (obviously) do it at the same time as the water line. The last thing you want to do is dig up the street and sidewalk twice. Good luck…

Call Balkan water mains and sewers. They’re always the lowest price and they are pro.

The cost of the sewer replacement has to do with many things, such as its diameter how deep is the sewer and how far into the street it has to go. $15K seems high, but if the city sewer line is very deep and on the other side of the street from your building, the price might be in the ballpark. The presence of a street tree may also affect the price.

Sounds high to me. Get more estimates – try Main Man. But the power wash/root killer idea seems like a good one.
