Gas Meter Reinstallation

Hey B’stoners! Quick question. A few years ago we removed our 2nd gas meter from our legal 2 family home (since we were using it as a 1 family at the time).  We are going to begin using the home as a two family w/rental so we wanted to get the meter reinstalled. National Grid mentioned that we’ll  need to have the gas line checked and the plumber will need to file for a permit w/the DOB.  Assuming that the gas ling is in good condition, any rough estimates on the cost to get the permit and rough timeframe for the DOB to come and inspect? Any plumber recs are appreciated. Thanks a lot,

It depends on what shows up in National Grid’s system. Sometimes they just come, do a pressure test and install a meter. Sometimes it as removed to long ago. When that happens the plumber needs to file an LAA job, then do his own pressure test. Once he passes he issues a blue card and then national grid will install the meter.

I second Gennady. Hire a plumber. He will file an LAA and call for an inspection. He will have already tested the lines to make sure there are no leaks when DOB shows up. DOB will do the inspection and give gas authorization. Once gas authorization is given, Nat Grid will show up with a meter. They will do their own test and if that passes, whgich it most certainly should, they will install the meter and turn on the service.

 National grid does their own test, but only after they will have gas authorization from DOB, and gas authorization is a result of gas line testing and certification. To test the line plumber must file LAA ( limited alteration application) and there is no such thing as a cost for permit, plumber has to give price for testing and part of the estimate is dob fee and expediting cost. But it usually is not broken down, and comes as a complete cost of the job.

In my experience, National Grid will come out to turn on the line and check it themselves when they do so (by watching the meter). If the meter goes nuts, they’ll shut it off and leave. You would only need to have a plumber inspect the line if there’s a problem, and you would only need to file for a permit if a new line has to be installed. Did you let National Grid know the meter was removed at your request because you had a single family house and not because there was a problem with the line? However, that all said, National Grid came out and supposedly turned on our line, then charged us for it for several months. Then we had an electrical upgrade which destroyed our gas line because it turned out that all along the gas line was NOT on. I know, it makes no sense. I think National Grid is unreliable. In any case, it can’t hurt to call a plumber. I’ve used Nu-Lite of Maspeth. They are wonderful with gas pipe and oil heating systems — that is their area of expertise. In 2009, they said a permit would cost about $1,000 but that it could take longer than a month to get the permit — there was no predicting it.
