We’re about to go in contract on a brownstone, and are trying to figure out how to budget.  Can anyone offer ballpark figures on the following work? – run lines for and install a washer/dryer on the garden floor (easy access to lines in basement) – run lines for and install a dishwasher on the garden floor (again, easy access) – replace a sewer main in the basement – switch up the installed 3 boilers/3 hw heaters (all just installed, for 3 apts) so that we’re using one boiler for the whole house, and two hw heaters in parallel Thanks for any help; this is our first post but we’ve lurked for a while and are big fans… definitely appreciate the recs we’ve gleaned.

Plumbing companies could give you better estimates. Before you sign a contract / close on the place maybe you can get verbal/email ballparks if you provide some more detail. Run lines for washer and  (gas?)  dryer & dishwasher – depending on how long those runs are – maybe several hundred bucks each. Plumbers may or may not want to deal with your appliance installations, but that’s not a big deal and you could get a handyman for that after the plumbing work is done if they’re delivered later, or pay the another several hundred bucks to have the plumbers install them if you have them. Replace a sewer main – again depends on how long, but I’m guessing you could be into thousands. Re-pipe 3 hw heaters to run 2 in parallel to serve all 3 units doesn’t sound like a huge job – maybe several hundred more assuming it’s part of the larger job. Switch to use one out of boiler for the whole house — If the 3 boilers are sized correctly for one unit each, it’s probably a very bad idea to try to heat the whole house with an undersized boiler. If you need to install one new right-sized boiler, it’s probably marginally more than the cost of a typical boiler replacement because of the extra work involved in ripping out 3 boilers & repiping. I’m guessing 8 to 20k.
