Paint finish for molding details
what about eggshell finish for moldings rather than semi? eggshell is between flat and satin, both of which are below semi. eggshell can be washed better than flat or matte, and will be the least intrusive in terms of gloss.

Totally lost here. So we’re going for a very old world, lived-in, look. Our parlor will have big crown moldings, baseboard moldings, and applied panel moldings (upper and lower) with a chair rail. Flat greige paint on the walls (BM Balboa Mist) and flat white ceilings (BM Super White). I’ve been advised that the crown moldings should be painted flat to avoid a “brand spanking new reno” look. But what about the baseboard and applied panel moldings? I want the panel moldings to be in the same color as the walls, but unsure whether to do flat or semi. Ditto on the baseboard. Seems a cleaning disaster to go with flat for baseboard, but I’m worried about the moldings not matching if I do semi…?? Help!! Attached is an inspiration image of the general aesthetic we’re going for (though the walls in the image are white whereas ours will be a warm grey).

I would not paint any of them flat. Moldings are typically painted satin or semi gloss. You are right about the dust collection if flat.

I would not paint any of the woodwork flat. It will be a dust magnet and very hard to clean. As Dave suggests, go with satin or semi gloss.

Ben Moore Satin Impervo Oil. It is made for moldings and being an oil and not a glossy oil, I suspect it is the look you are trying to achieve. be aware that Moore now makes a water base satin impervo; I have never used it and do not know how it turns out. Steve

I have reread your post and have to alert you to a concern with oils – they will yellow over time. You may be best working with a satin water base or even talking to someone about the Satin Impervo Water Base. do not do the moldings in flat; they will look as though they have been prime coated and left. These are very personal decisions but my preference is to use semi-gloss for baseboards only. Flat (or matte for greater washability) for crown moldings and panels moldings. I hate moldings other than baseboards in semi-gloss. Against the flat wall paint, they stick out like a sore thumb. It’s just a very “boarding house” aesthetic to me. Actually, I don’t like panel moldings and picture rails period because they make a room seem smaller and too grandmotherly. By the way, we’ve used BM oil-based semi-gloss on woodwork and it hasn’t yellowed in 10 years. The finish is light years beyond anything you can achieve with water-based paint. It’s ability to flow and level is completely superior. Of course it must be done by hand — no rollers!

NeoGrec I think I’m in your camp here. Not to discount the other opinions! But I am just not going for a new look here and I worry about the semi moldings “popping” against the flat walls. More images of the look we’re going for here. So NeoGrec – what would you do on the door and window casings? And what about the doors themselves? PS This is going in the front parlor where we have 11′ ceilings and crazy width / length, so I’m not worried about it making the room seem small. And I pride myself on being a little grandmotherly… 😉

We also selected Balboa Mist in flat for our walls and love it. And we also picked a bright white for the trim (can’t remember the exact white shade) and in the end I was disappointed. I felt that it looked too white and modern in an older townhouse. We are repainting with Farrow and Ball Wimborne white, which is a softer transition. Still white, but not too white. Maybe you will love the bright white but it’s worth testing on a large section first – I wish I had! And we went with a satin, which was the least amount of sheen while still being durable. That worked out well.

Hm… So I’m stuck on how to handle this due to the transitions – the baseboard molding is continuing up the stairs where we have some Super White walls in a few rooms, and I don’t think I’d want the molding to be darker (or more off white) than the walls… But I hear you on not wanting that stark sharp white… UGH I feel so stuck!!

Here’s one approach: semi-gloss for all woodwork (doors, door moldings, baseboards, window sills and frames) and flat for all plaster work (crown moldings). The exception to the rule — there has to be a catch, right? — is flat for panel moldings and picture rails. For what it’s worth, we used BM Ivory White 925 for the trim. It’s a classic ivory — and a lot less yellow than it appears on my computer monitor. Our house, btw, is very traditional architecturally speaking but with a modern vibe based on our furniture and color choices.

NeoGrec – that sounds like a solid plan! Question: did you also use Ivory White for your ceilings? Or did you go with a straight white? Also (while I have your ear) – my contractor says he’s just using the water-based BM Regal paints for everything, including trim. Is that ok? Or is there a trim-specific paint they should be using? Lastly, do you find there’s a difference between BM flat and matte? I’m inclined to go with flat but just wondering if there’s a discernable aesthetic difference versus the cleanability trade off…

Ok I think I’m going with BM Cotton Balls…seems to mesh well with the other colors we have spec’ed thus far (Deep Caviar and Balboa Mist). Anyone have any major objections to that color? (Cough, NeoGrec?)

We used Decorator’s White for our ceilings. I will say I’m a huge fan of oil-based paint for woodwork. The finish is superior to water-based. Our window sills almost look like they were lacquered, they are so smooth. But oil paint does off-gas so if that’s a concern you should avoid it. BM matte has a tiny, tiny amount of sheen but it is easier to clean than flat. On the other hand, I love my Mr. Clean Magic Eraser for removing scuffs from walls — brilliant invention. Good luck!

I agree with what everyone says here about semi gloss is best for wood work and flat is fine for plaster crown moldings. . Also, Super White is way too white for anything, in my experience. It looks like the marshmallow fluff in a can. It’s very harsh. . I haven’t personally used Cotton Balls or Decorator’s White but I think either would be preferable to Super White. . Test everything before you start, it’s the only way. . Enjoy!
