What sheen for ornate ceilings?

We are blessed with the original wedding-cake ceilings in our parlor level. They’re in amazing condition, but it has come time to paint them. We’re painting them white, but I’m not so sure about the sheen. The rest of the house has or will have regular flat ceilings and the walls are eggshell with satin moldings for living/dining area and all satin in the kitchen. What do other brownstoners do with their fancy ceilings? All eggshell? Flat field and eggshell moldings? Eggshell and satin moldings? I’ve already driven myself bonkers picking the rest of the houses colors and now I’m going nutty.  I don’t know if this helps, but our style is otherwise fairly modern with a slight scandanavian tilt.

We just had our plaster ceilings restored and we used flat white paint on the ceilings. If your ceilings are the original plaster, I would not use anything but a flat white paint.

                            Flat field and Satin moldings.  Flat looks soft and smooth for surfaces that are supposed to be smooth, satin reflects light and highlights the curves and details of the moldings better.  However I wouldnt do alot of back and forth between the two – if there is a there is a thin molding in the middle of a field just use the field paint.  But definitely do medalions, crowm moldings, etc. in satin.

I would either do the ceilings the same as the walls or stick with flat. Shiny ceilings don’t look good. BTW, I was in a house last night with a lot of ceiling decorations. They had painted the ceiling a slightly darker shade than the walls, and had picked out the decorations in off white. They might have been trying to make the high ceilings look lower, since it was a parlor floor used as a bedroom. The ceilings looked great.
