Plaster Medallion

We removed the drop ceilings and came across beautiful but damaged wedding cake moldings which we’re having replaced.  However, we’re desperately looking for a source for a large detailed 3′ x 2′ oblong center medallion.  Does anyone have a local source for either plaster or plastic medallions.  I’ve seen the scant offerings at Lowe’s/Depot and it doesn’t work for us.  Thanks for your help.

We have 3 Felber medallions in our house. Real plaster. Real old-fashioned craftmanship. Only limitation is that they don’t have much choice when it comes to Eastlake-era medallions (the more geometric, lozenge shaped ones).

I ditto busky’s rec for Felber.  The hardest part is definitely making the choice.  We bought a gorgeous plaster medallion from them and I don’t hesitate to recommend them for great selection, pricing, speedy and safe delivery.

You want Felber Ornamental at http://www.felber.net/. I did this research before – I forget the exact details, but I think they bought the patterns from the company that probably made the original medallions in your house. (Of course, that might be the different supplier I found for our tin ceilings in a different room). In any case, their stuff is great, and quite affordable. The only problem is choosing which design you want!

 I can’t remember the name of the store at the moment) that has several very nice medallions.  That is where we got the one for our front parlorhttp://www.mbchief.com and it looks very authentic – very thick, detailed, and nicely done.  They had various shapes, not just round ones and very reasonable prices.

Architectural Sculpture and Restoration, www.asrnyc.com, 1818 Atlantic Ave. in Brooklyn 718/467-2013 has plaster medallions some of which are reproduction of designs orginal to Brooklyn brownstones.  It’s a good idea to call first to get the hours and make an appointment. We mail ordered a plaster medallion from Boston Ornament. There is a lighting store on the corner of Delancey/Kenmare and Bowery in Manhattan (southwest corner right on the corner – but I can’t remember the name of the store at the moment) that has several very nice medallions.  That is where we got the one for our front parlor and it looks very authentic – very thick, detailed, and nicely done.  They had various shapes, not just round ones and very reasonable prices.
