Where to Find Day Labor

My husband and I are getting stone slabs for our backyard dropped off in front of our house on Saturday morning. It all has to go up the stairs, through the house and out to the backyard. I think it’s going to be too much to do ourselves. I’ve asked around but can’t seem to find someone who I can hire for an hour or so to help. I’ve heard that there are men who hang out at Lowes or Home Depot that are looking for extra work; has anyone hired someone from either place? Are they there on Saturdays? What would you pay for an hour or two of work? Thanks for any info!

Go to the U-Haul on 4th Avenue and 6th Street.  There are many day laborers there.

We asked our florist (on 7 ave) to recommend us 2 day labors.  They were both from his church, hardworkding, strong and very polite.  We paid $10 an hour and got them lunch & water about another $10 each.

We used guys from HD on Dekalb once for a labor job as you’ve described and we’ve not had the best of luck…one guy kepy putting tape on his face and moving it from his cheek to his forehead…sadly, I’m not kidding.  Then they wanted their entire day’s pay before taking a lunch break.  I’m sure that there are good people out there but we decided to never go that route again…I mean would you trust a guy with a tape fetish in your bathroom when he needs to go? That being said, a lot of the transport guys that hang out in HD do both transport and removal and we’ve hired them for basic labor type gigs and have had really great experiences…they’ll generally work by the job, too, instead of wanting an entire day’s pay.

I’ve used guys from HD parking lot in Queens. You typically have to get them early as work sites usually grab most of them by 9.  They usually want jobs that give them work for the day though.  Pay them anywhere from $10 and up an hour but you’ll have to shell out for at least a 6 hour day.

The Uhual place on 4th Ave is where I would go.  I have not hired day laborers but always see guys looking for work there and friends of friends have recnetly had good luck hiring guys there for unloading moving truck (I think on a weekend).
