Just visited brownstoner to look for info on window companies. Tried to search archieves but can’t sort by category that I could find. Will post for info in new forum but I know the info exists out there and hate to double someone else’s search.

great feedback. if there is value to people in bringing the old content in to this format we can do it. since most of the traffic to the old forum came from google searches, we felt a forum archive was sufficient.

I’m not happy. The trade off of nicer asthetics for burying all the valuable info that was here up until yesterday is not a prudent one. I have seen many forums change style and software withour sacrificing the older threads. This sites value has gone down, and basically its like starting all over again.

Graphically it’s nice, and the info seems to flow faster. But I’m not happy that I had to re-register. I often referred to old posts by clicking on my username, but they’re all gone now. sniff, sniff.

As a web programmer myself, i have to say i am extremely disappointed in the new site, for two main reasons. First of all, i don’t understand why you weren’t able to bring over user accounts from the old software. Even if user passwords were encrypted, you could have assigned all users a temporary password so that people wouldn’t have to register all over again. This has been a long-running forum and there are usernames that have become associated with certain posters, and the fact that some of those names can now be stolen by others is really unacceptable. Next, i don’t understand why the archived messages weren’t imported into this format. If Brownstoner hired a programming firm then they should have been able to have the programming chops to get this done. While TPTB at Brownstoner might not realize it, the forum is one of the most important parts of their site, from a user’s perspective, and in the 1.0 version of the site it sucked that the search functionality was so terrible and that there was no better organization of the forum (you know, like a REAL webforum. bulletin board systems have been around since at least 1996\. Why doesn’t brownstoner have one?). I was hoping that the relaunch would bring us a real forum, but instead we are left with something even worse than we had before. Being able to search the forum is of crucial importance for users, and having to do two separate searches, one in the new forum and one in the archive, to find a needed result is really kind of ridiculous. Wait -there is a third reason, too. Where is the html formatting for these replies? how can i add a link? upload a photo? Honestly, this whole voting on answers thing is barely useful. Here’s hoping that the folks at BlankSlate (blankslate.com) can get all of these things done, correctly.

I can see comments and post in the Forum but can’t see comments or post on the main page of the blog. Anyone else having this issue? Suggestions?
