Wall Thickness

In a typical pre-1900 brownstone, how thick are the walls? By my rough measurements, the Front and Rear Facade are ~ 18″,  Interior Brick Partition walls are  ~ 8″ Side Party Wall – was unable to measure, but guessing 8″ How accurate are these?

Well, I don’t know what’s average and I also don’t know how you figure out your own individual situation. But I do want to sound a cautionary note. There’s a myth that brownstones and rowhouses have very thick party walls. Yet our neighbor’s plumber broke through the wall while installing new pipes. We saw his workboot sticking through the hole! I was so upset I couldn’t stand to look closely at the damage so I can’t say if the wall is actually one or two bricks thick. Probably two, judging from the sound levels. But, even if that means an 8″ thick wall, it is frighteningly easy to break through.
