come on, it is obviously about revenue. they pulled you oever on the seatbelt pretext, because if you didn not have your license, registration, or current insurance card on you, they could write you a ticket for that. even though it would be dismissed when you proved you had current registration and insurance…not sure about license…they would have hit their quota. No need to bash unions or individual cops, they do not set the quotas.

A bit off-topic and this may just be coincidental but.. I was driving in Manhattan last week when I was pulled over by an NYPD officer. He asked me for license, registration etc. Being completely unaware of what I might have done wrong I asked him. He told me that when I passed him it appeared I didn’t have my seatbelt on. This was completely untrue as I’d just come off the West Side Hwy and absolutely had my seatbelt on. He looked at me for a few seconds and then said “okay, you’re free to go”. A couple of days ago also in Manhattan, a good friend was pulled over for switching lanes without signaling! I mean, come on, who signals a lane change in Manhattan? He actually was issued a ticket (although he was given a choice between that ticket and a no seatbelt ticket although, he was wearing a seatbelt, but its apparently less points). Are these two odd NYPD encounters just random coincidence or is something new going on? BTW, we both drive fairly ordinary cars (neither junk nor luxury), both look fairly ordinary, even sort of middle agey. Unless NYPD is profiling for average white guys or looking for morditas, I don’t get it.

The entitlement of the unions is driving up the costs to the sity and revenues are down. More of wall Street is moving to CT and elsewhere.

Maybe it was an end of the month quota drive or rookie cops trying to look busy while on a footpost? I once had one rookie peer into the back seat of my car to see whether my two year old grandson was belted into his car seat. Satisfied, the officer smiled and waved me on. Once, I even got a ticket, while parked on my own block, for a hanging license plate. It was done by one of a group of rookies assigned to a neighborhood impact program. They had to look like they were doing something all day. It was dismissed after my mechanic attested to fixing it.

I got a seatbelt ticket about 3 years back on Vanderbilt after I passed the trap at Atlantic. These are common. The cop noticed my shoulder strap was not buckled. The seatbelt law in NYS does not require a shoulder strap, but NYC does. The cop saw me unbuckle my seatbelt to show him my license etc., but it was too late. The judge found me guilty but waived the fine. I had to pay the surcharge. I junked the car with the electric problem in the passive restraint shoulder belt system. Many drivers were in court for seatbelt violations, some re children. Some were also accused of picking up fares when not actually licensed to do so. One guy presented a colorfully stamped license (suitable for framing) from Nigeria. I like my law enforcement spread a little more evenly, but I am not against it. Please use your turn signals, if you know you are going to turn. If you don’t know you are going to turn, you shouldn’t be driving.

A co-worker of mine was just pulled over this week (in Queens) and given a ticket for no seatbelt, although he was wearing his seatbelt. NYPD needs to find better things to do.

OP here. I’m well aware that NYPD gives out tickets for not wearing a seatbelt. My question, since these two incidents were within days of each other and neither one of us can even remember the last time we were pulled over, was, is something new going on? Also, keep in mind I WAS wearing my seatbelt so the action seemed to be a pretext for stopping me.

In regards to the lack of turn signal use. Learn to use them. With the number of bicyclists up, its critical to their safety that they know when you’re looking to turn or change lanes. I cant tell you the number of times oblivious drivers have cut me off because they werent paying attention, had they at least signaled their turn I would have had some idea of what they were thinking.

I drive alot, always near the end of the month, they pull people over for tons of little things to give tickets out to. Also those cops who walk, gives tons of tickets to park cars at the end of the month. many times for stupid things like, i took seats out of my car’s back seats(honda element you can fold or take out the seats for more space hauling stuff), apparently its illegal, even if its a personal choice lol, douche fake judge always sent back guilty when i pleaded it in write in. cost time and money to see one and argue in person. but the ones who judge it via paper work sucks ass from my experince. they always side with the cops.
