I just got served! Please help!

I just got an APPEARANCE AND ANSWER paper that says I need to check on of these following in 20 days: CLAIM IS DEINED or CLAIM IS ADMITTED or CLAIM IS ADMITTED IN PART OF $______. Long story short, I owe chase 5,000 from credit card from 4 years ago that I have no made paymeny on. I was a student back then and I am a graduate student now also, no job, just a student. So what do I need to do here? I do owe them that much, but I obviously have NO money to pay them. I barley have enough to pay rent, thank god for food stamps or else I couldnt even eat. Now I dont want to not pay them, I will pay them, but I Need to graduate first and get a job, then I will gladley pay them. My graduation is going to be in 2 years …. any suggestion?

When I started my current PhD program, I had spent my savings (while I was in a full-time MA program with only a part-time job and no stipend) and then ran up credit card debt larger than yours (some of it was related to travel costs associated with research).  But guess what?  When my PhD student stipend kicked in, I set aside $1000/month and paid it all off.  Does it take discipline? Yes. Take a look at your budget, cut the restaurants, bars, etc. (drink with friends at home), buy cheap groceries for awhile, and you can do it. Then you can return to your former life.

Plus, you haven’t given any thought to what this has done to your credit rating.  Many places won’t rent you an apartment after doing s check.  Get a job and start paying.  No reason a grad student can’t have a part time job.

If you do not respond and they enter a judgment against you… after that your creditor can attempt to garnish your wages and/or put a restraining order on your bank account.  If you have no income and no money in the bank, there will be no immediate impact to you, but they’re likely to get paid eventually and your debt will grow with interest accruing and legal costs to collect added to what you owe.  If you don’t dispute that you owe the money, contact them, explain your situation and try to work out a plan.
