source for marble poultice?

I’ve scraped off 10 layers of paint from a marble fireplace in my house. The last layer above the stone didn’t really seem so much like paint but maybe some kind of thin brown primer, no idea. Paint stripper barely made a difference with it, it only came off with a razor blade and as it did it turned into a fine powder. I think that’s what stained the marble with a kind of unsightly brownish tint. Other than baking soda/peroxide, does anyone know of a store that carries poultice somewhere in south brooklyn? Any advice greatly appreciated!

Thanks, in the meantime I ordered some poultice powder from Stone Care International… we’ll see how it goes once it arrives.

I don’t know where you can pick something up in your neighborhood but we always specify the sealants and stone cleaners from Miracle Sealants Company – they are really excellent. http://miraclesealants.com/a_poultice_plus.html – many of their products are carried in various stores in the city: you could call them to find out where you can get the poultice.

Oh, yeah, looks like marble. I’m afraid I don’t know anything about cleaning marble.

It’s true that a poultice is a method… but it’s also a product sold as a powder which you mix up, as a quick search of Home Depot turns up… unfortunately they don’t carry it in the store. I could order one of these, but none of them seem to be for the type of stain I have: http://bit.ly/z6vx9K Photos here. White rag in one photo to show color comparison. I don’t think the true color of the marble is white, but it’s lighter than this yellow/brownish tint in the detail shot.

Many slate fireplaces had a faux marble finish applied in the factory and baked in a kiln. This may explain the last layer of brown paint. If you post a photo of the entire fireplace, I might be able to tell what type it is from the style.

Are you positive it’s marble and not slate?

Poultice is not a specific cleaning product, but rather a way to apply any kind of cleaning product.  If I were you I would first want to know if the staining were a result of the brown primer, or perhaps a reaction within the stone (Tuckahoe marble tends to stain a brown-orange) and might explain why the fireplace was first covered with paint. http://www.nps.gov/hps/tps/briefs/brief01.htm
