Recessed lighting for new construction (shallow depth) ceiling?
the new integrated LED recessed units have a much lower profile design, making them the ideal solution for such situations, here yo can know more at http://www.recessedlightinglayout.com/2014/07/low-profile-recessed-lighting.html [](http://www.recessedlightinglayout.com/2014/07/low-profile-recessed-lighting.html “low profile recessed lighting”)you have to find it alternatives with similar style and function like Surface mount Downlights which require no minimum recess depth as they mount directly onto the surface of a ceiling.

I’m buying a new construction apt which has the typical “no ceiling lights in the living room” developer special. I’m a big fan of recessed lighting (gives lots of bright light without having to commit to a design fixture that draws attention). I just want light, not a design statement. That said, what are my options for ceiling lighting? Right now i have drywall covering a concrete ceiling (my best guess), and can’t really drop the ceiling more than 2-3 inches because of the way the HVAC is set up (dropping the ceiling would block the HVAC vent that’s in a soffit). Has anyone faced this issue? Any creative solutions out there? I’ve tried researching “low profile recessed lights” but have come up with only low voltage halogens, which i’d prefer to avoid if possible due to low light output. Obviously i’ll need an electrician, but would love some advice on what to ask for…

do a partial drop ceiling vs. dropping the whole thing. drop a rectangle in the middle (giving enough clearance for the HVAC flow) – ie kind of like what you see in office conference rooms and building entrance hallways.

>lots of bright light without having to commit… Sounds aesthetically challenged! I would seriously reconsider… you’re adding a dropped ceiling *only* for tophats?! They give the worst kind of undifferentiated light. For a third of that price, buy some really nice fixtures (the ones I can’t afford) and be sure to put ’em on a dimmer. Good ligthing means multiple sources and types … table lamps, floor lamps and minimal ceiling fixtures. Lots of flexibiitly; you can change the lighting for different conditions and replace lamps if you get tired of the look.

There are some very shallow downlights available — 4″ or so deep. Or use shallow surface mounted ceiling fixtures. Or use wall mounted uplights that will bounce light off the ceiling. Ed Kopel Architects

It’s very likely in your new construction that the drywall is attached to steel rafters–plenty of room between those beam for whatever recessed lighting you want. Should be no need to drop the ceiling at all. Good luck.
