Need help in finding 3" recessed light housing for 1 1/8" inch ceiling thickness

I will cut to the chase.  For our ceiling, we are installing a 5/8″ dry wall, together with 1/2″ soundproofing.  This gives our ceiling a total of 1 1/8″ thickness. It turns out that the Eurofase 3″ housing that I was going to use is not compatible with anything beyond the standard 5/8″ thinkness.  Basically, you cannot set the trim properly and it will not snap-in.  After doing much research, I can only find one brand/model which is adjustable for  ceiling thickness of 1/2″ up to 1 1/2″.    It is Halo H36TAT.   It is sold at Home Depot and I have heard unkind things about the long-term quality of this device. Can anyone recommend any other brand (model) options that would allow for 1 1/8″ thickness to work?   My wife and I definately want to have the soundproof later installed.   We will be using **50-watt GU10 line-voltage** lights and need **NEW HOUSING**.Thank you in advance for your input / advice.

Why dont you just hold the soundproofing back fron the edge of the drywall opening enough to allow clearance for the clips. they probably dont need more than an inch or so.

Nope.  I am not using MR16, as those are LOW-voltae.  I am using LINE-voltage, and those require a GU10 type 50 watt bulbs.

GU10 indicates the lamp base type, not the lamp type – i think you mean MR16 bulb.

try the Iris RPN3MR – it will work with your dimensions, mid-range price wise, about $240 per fixture.  they need to be ordered, but can be ordered online (although they are sometimes in stock at Lendy on Grand St.)

on the low budget end – try WAC lighting, they have these at most Chinatown electrical supply places – probably will end up being around $110.

Thank you for the leads.  Unfortuantely so far from what I saw online for The Bowery, they doen’t seem to carry that 3″ version for line-voltage by any of the brands listed, but I will call them on Monday.   And Cacelectric is closed until Sunday, and I will call them on that day.    Really appreciate everyone’s help!   Keep ’em coming…

We installed recessed lights in a 1 7/8″ thick ceiling recently.  The clients sourced their fixtures here:  http://cacelectric.com/

The Bowery is also a great place to take a look at what is available.  Beware however of the numerous non-UL rated options.  Make sure the fixtures are rated for the U.S.

That’s a really specific application — I don’t know a particular fixture that will work for your situation, but have you checked the Bowery yet?  There are so many lighting stores there, but if I were in your shoes, I’d probably start with Lighting by Gregory, 158 Bowery.

Good Luck!
