I agree with marie-helene. It looks way better than it used to. There are a lot of varieties. Some look better than others. None of them feel real, but a lot feel pretty good. All will look fake up close. I’m using it in a small high traffic area that I want to keep as a soft surface for kids. Grass would likely not survive there and since most of the rest of the yard is hardscaped it would be unusable after rain. Two other landscapers I contacted were blueingreengardens.com and gardendig.com

Synthetic grass can be the right solution, but it’s not cheaper or easier to install than sod: the ground needs to be prepared carefully, with proper drainage and tamping, and you need to back it with landscape fabric before pinning it. I never thought I’d say that, but the new artificial turf looks really good, and in places that are very shady and dry, where real grass (or most plants) would never survive, it can be the perfect idea. I am installing some right now underneath an existing yew tree, right next to a cedar playhouse we built for the owners’ children. It’s going to look great, and nothing steppable would grow in that spot.

I would rather not as it may further jeopardize my relationship to my adjoining neighbors.

I wasn’t going to post for fear of being brownlisted from Brownstoner, but I also had a terrible experience with Sasha and little miracles designs not related to the quality of his actual design work but in his and his workers behavior while performing the work.

Synthetic grass is expensive and difficult to maintain. It gets wind blown debris in it like leaves and other trash that must be removed immediately and not allowed to decay. If you don’t keep it vacuumed, it will have weed seeds sprouting in it, and then it’s difficult to remove them. once that happens, the backing starts to deteriorate and it loses structural integrity. Overall, plain old hardscape or maybe a “lawn alternative” like creeping thyme would be a better choice.

I had a dreadful experience with LIttle Miracle Designs. He was unreliable, didn’t listen to what I had told him and I think grossly overcharged me.

I’m currently working with little miracles designs. They advertise here. Work hasn’t started yet but Sasha is pretty responsive and he has pretty detailed estimates.
