Thanks Marie-Helene. Your pricing was 100% spot in. We decided to do the hard scaling with the help if family and have completed the paver phase of the projects. We are still deciding on grass or sod at the moment. Can you share your “go to source for seeds and sod?

Thanks! They were both very fun gardens to design. I am of many minds when it comes to lawn. It is a terribly maladapted plant for our weather, so when we care for a lawn, what we mean is that we are continually supporting a dying plant through reseeding, weeding, fertilizing, watering. It’s probably the most high-maintenance aspect of any garden. Also, because it needs to be watered daily in the NY summer, it is the perfect breeding ground for tiger mosquitoes. As to seed vs. sod, here are the pros and cons: seed: inexpensive, rooted strongly enough you can use a reel mower, you can use a mix of seed to adapt to shadier and sunnier parts of your yard. sod: instant gratification, pricy, proper soil prep & installation is crucial for success, must use an electric mower. The Farmer’s Almanach is predicting an early spring this year, with low temperatures and rain from mid-March to April, and a drier and hotter than average late spring and summer. So if you want to seed a lawn, which will be the last piece of your installation, because you can’t walk on it for at least the first 3 weeks, you should aim for a mid-April completion.

Thanks for your response Marie-Helene. I am looking to do some of the work myself, for instance I would ideally like to seed a lawn which would require planting in late April to May. We are big fans of symmetry and clean lines and tend What is your take on sod vs seed? After viewing your portfolio, we like elements of the work done on Clinton Avenue and South Portland Street.

You’re probably looking at $5,000 to $10,000, depending on the pavers, how much of the work you can do yourself, the size of the planters, the kind of materials and plants, whether you are going to seed a lawn (quite a commitment of time and care) or go for a ready-made roll-out.
