Landscaping - laying new sod

We are looking for a landscaper to lay down new sod in our backyard – it is about 1000 sq feet. Would be greatly appreciated if someone could recommend a landscaper willing to engage in this small project. Thank you in advance.

Dragonetti did a sod install for neighbors a few doors away from us. The grass died. They came back (which is good, I acknowledge) and it died again. Could be bad luck but our neighbor felt they weren’t careful enough.

dont do it i have never heard of Brooklyn installation of sod that lasted more than one season. go with ground cover

We put in sod last summer and used Dragonetti- I was very happy with the job and their follow up service. When I had the initial meeting with them, they were upfront that the sod would have a lifespan. It would thin, we would need to reseed, and eventually we’d have to replace it. Turf was another option, but about twice the price. We decided to give sod a go. I’m not sure what NeoGrec’s experience was, but I’ve been happy with Dragonetti to date.

Sod is a terrible idea in a brooklyn backyard. It has an 80% chance of failure…kind of like lawns in Las Vegas. Reconsider your plan, since it makes no sense

It may be best to have whoever you buy the sod from install it too. Only because the failure rate is pretty high so if someone else lays it you’ll have less redress if it doesn’t work out. Preparation is key. The soil must be dug over and amended if necessary to correct the pH, and help with drainage and feeding the roots of your grass. It should be then be raked to create a nice level surface. The grass will need to be carefully tamped down. If there are significant air pockets, the roots will die. Honestly, I gave up on our mini-lawn. I was constantly over-seeding bald patches. It needed lots of water. And ultimately our yard was too shady which, combined with poor drainage and poorer still soil, put paid to it. We now have gravel. If I had kids, I’d put down artificial turf — there are some pretty nice ones available these days. Good luck. As to who to use, avoid Dragonetti. Try Chelsea Garden Center — they are expensive but professional.
