Renting a room in my house
I have a spare bedroom in my house that I am thinking about renting out (to an acquaintance) to get a little extra income. My home is a two-family and the apartment is currently occupied. I live in the main residence. What are the rules re: “renting” a room in your house? Are those “tenants” granted the same sort of protection as those with their own separate apartment or is there more leeway on the side of the owner when it comes to renting a room within your actual domicile?

Thanks mopar. But what types of protections do they have? For instance, if they stop paying rent, can I change the locks on the house? Can’t do that with a tenant. You have to take them to court. I am just trying to figure out how much more flexibility I have when I am ready to reclaim my space. I plan on having a month-to-month. But what if after a month’s notice, they refuse to leave. Can they then be considered trespassers and I can simply have them escorted off the premises by the police?

You can rent a room to anyone you want. It’s your apartment. Get a roommate agreement.
