Legality of landlord requesting additional deposit when renewing lease

Rent is increasing and landlord is asking for difference in new rent and old rent for additional deposit? THis is a first in 9 years.THe difference will total $500.00.Is this legal? Also does the length of stay as a renter grant one more rights?

sounds completely normal to have a security deposit that matches the rent. you can always look at a tenants rights website to find out. may depend if you’re rent stabilized or not.

The increase in deposit is normal but many landlords forget/neglect to collect it when the lease is renewed.  When I rented from a big management company this was standard with each renewal.  When I have rented in other smaller buildings, not so much. It may be that your landlord finally realized that the deposit doesn’t match the rent.   I don’t know about length of stay and rights.
