My not-so-gentlemanly (Brooklyn) landlord never put the security deposit in an escrow account and now the lease is up and I am moving out. Knowing his history, I’m certain he will not return my deposit. Can I withhold last month’s rent until he puts the deposit in an escrow account? Can he take me to housing court for this? Is there any law requiring him to put the deposit in an escrow account? Any advice on how to recover the deposit? I have taken very good care of his property and nothing is broken.  Any advice?
