Walk In Tubs
Cate, all of that added height i sometimes see on bathroom floors in these houses is not because they needed a thick bed to lay tile on, i suspect the outlet on the old tubs was so much higher, and higher under the floor, that the connection to the stack is higher, so when the put the new tub in, they often have to cut and reset (lower) the height of the opening in the verticle stack which is costly and possibly risky. So they lay a 3″ bed of mortar instead.
I am only guessing because i have seen this quite often and from a tiling perspective, it is unnecessary and pointless.

How difficult would it be to replace our 1899 claw foot tub with s walk in tub?
I’m interested in a basic tub with a hand held shower. We have no need for air or water jets, or other hydrotherapy features.
Also, is it practicable to get a cast iron claw foot tub down one flight of stairs and out of the house without breaking it up? My son snd DIL would like it for their house (and if not aI’d want to use it as a planter in my front areaway).

some thoughts:
1. Is your stairs a straight run or is there a curve at the top ?
2. A cast iron tub weights weighs about 400-500 pounds and you probably don’t have room for more than two people to carry/guide it down the stairs’
3. If it’s a straight run, perhaps some sort of slide (plywood?) on the stairs with a pulley or winch to let the tub slide down slowly. Piano movers might have an idea.
4. Or say it’s not worth it and just break it up.
5. Or maybe there is some sort of appliance that can safely get you into your clawfoot tub.

Do you mean walk-in shower or a standard tub with a lip of about three feet? Re brands you might want to look at American Standard, Kohler, and Duravit. (You will need a tub that fits your dimensions and circumstances, such as one meant for a left-hand corner that is open on the two sides where it rests against tiled walls and closed on the two sides visible in the room, for example.) While a small project, you might consider speaking to an interior designer or architect with bathroom experience. (If you’re adding a walk-in shower, a designer is a must because these are custom designed for the space.) If the clawfoot tub will fit through your doors and stair with or without its feet, as is likely, then it can be carried outside in one piece without chopping it up. It took six burly men (all contractors and plumbers) to temporarily move our clawfoot tub outside the bathroom and into the front hall on the parlor level (and it wasn’t easy for them) when we installed a continuous Marmoleum floor in the bathroom. Getting the tub up and down the stairs and stoop will be a struggle. Perhaps something for movers of pianos and $100,000 60-inch-wide stoves or something. In any case, you will need contractors and plumbers to install the new tub and they will figure out how to remove the old one. If it were me and I were future proofing my own house, I would consider using the front garden floor room as a bedroom and look into leaving the tub alone and installing a self-contained bathing unit you sit in with a door that opens and closes like a car into a closet on the ground floor. Installation and removal is similar to an appliance like a washing machine, toilet, or sink. It can be piped with water and waste to and from the cellar below and also easily removed in the future.

One other thought: Whoever moves the tub will need to protect your stairs, threshold, floors, and stoop so they don’t break or crack. As well, perhaps they have methods to help them such as installing plywood slides on the stoop.

Thank you Cate and bobj;; I’m considering a walk in tub with a door. We’d mostly be using it for showers with occasional soaking baths. I have considered making our bedroom downstairs , but we have stairlifts, which my wife uses, and want to continue using the entire house.
I had an estimate from American Standard; Kohler doesn’t serve Brooklyn. They’d remove the old tub by cutting it and I don’t know that it would be worth hiring movers to get it down our curved stairway intact. I’m mot sure that we’ll proceed with this. We do have a sliding transfer bench that gets my wife into the tub, although it’s something of a PITA to use.
I’d really like to hear from anyone who has actually had a walk in tub installed.

American Standard, Kohler, and Duravit are makers of bathroom fixtures such as standard tubs and sinks. You specify or buy a fixture from them and hire contractors (who may in turn hire licensed plumbers) to redo the bathroom. AFAIK these brands do not make specialized tubs and showers for people who need assistance with daily tasks, but I haven’t researched it extensively as you may have done.
Bob, is the main bathroom the only spot on the bedroom floor with a waste line and water supply? Is there any extra space in the main bathroom or a nearby closet or adjacent room for a walk-in tub? The one I saw was about two or three feet wide and four or five feet high, similar to a washing machine.
As to Steve’s comment, the licensed plumbers create a new rough-in (as it’s called) for the new fixture. There will not be an issue with the height of the water supply, tub overflow, or waste line because the licensed plumbers will create a new rough-in that is to code and works with the new fixture.

Thanks Cate. Walk in tubs seem to be marketed specifically to people who have. difficulty. The American Standard rep said that installation wouldn’t be a problem. However we’d need to pay our stairlift company to remove and reinstall our stairlift to get the tub up. As I wrote earlier Kohler doesn’t serve Brooklyn, but I’ll look into Duravit. We may do nothing—these things are very costly and our transfer bench works OK. There are other waterlines in the dressing room’s between the main bedrooms, but its a very narrow space.

Thank you Bob. Now I see “walk in tub” is the right word for what I saw installed in a narrow but deep closet space on a garden floor. It must have had a plastic enclosure that went all the way up the wall and even perhaps covered the ceiling because AFAIR the space was not also lined in tile or otherwise waterproof, but the plastic enclosure was of course completely waterproof. Re installation, I am pretty sure an appropriate rough-in is required, and the installation people merely get the walk-in tub into the space, hook it up, and make sure it is working. Much like when you install a washing machine, the washing machine standpipe (or other appropriate plumbing) has to already be there. Pretty sure you will need a licensed plumber to first create the appropriate rough-in for the walk-in tub before the tub is delivered and installed no matter where you locate it. You can order a spec sheet for any model you are interested in and most likely it will let you know exactly what kind of rough-in is needed (as well as the exact dimensions of the tub of course). One thing to be sure of is that the walk-in tub can get through any doorways you have. Our doorways upstairs are very narrow, which has limited us to certain washing machines, fridges, stoves, sinks, tables, and so on. Best of luck with everything!

Good on the shower curtain. It’s very unlikely the new tub could be attached to the existing plumbing. The drain and supply lines won’t be in the right location, at the right height, or use compatible pipes. You will need licensed plumbers to first remove the old tub and to create the rough in for the new one. Once you have the exact specs for the new tub, you could have a plumber over to look at the situation and give you a bid. Removing the old tub could be more costly than creating the new rough-in, since they will need at least six men. When you speak to the plumbers on the phone, maybe inquire if they move tubs down stairs and stoops themselves or do they recommend a specific type of mover to do that instead?
